JASON SCHAEFFER
Before the advent of Instagram and Twitter, Jason was helping Fortune 100 brands like NFL Properties and Pfizer protect their trademarks and police their online presence. Over the past 15 years, he has worked in the domain name space as counsel and advisor to some of the largest domain name portfolio owners in the world. He also co-founded a digital marketing conference to help educate creators, startups and others regarding new TLD and other branding opportunities.
Since 2011, Jason addressed nearly all facets of the ICANN new gTLD process, including, but not limited to preparing applications for new gTLDs, Legal Rights Objections, Community Priority Evaluation and Objections, Requests for Reconsideration and petitions to the ICANN Board. He has also worked with parties in connection with the resolution of nearly 10 string contentions, and with the sale of gTLDs. He remains active with ICANN by participating in working groups and acting as a sub-chair to amend and improve rights protection mechanisms. Jason is one of a group of global experts that are evaluating and considering recommendations to reform and improve the UDRP.
He proudly architected the contention resolution to allow DotMusic Ltd. to obtain the right to run what will hopefully become a “game changer” – a safe, trusted, community based gTLD for .MUSIC. The idea behind .MUSIC is to provide a platform where registrants are verified, and music is sold, shared, and distributed in a manner that benefits the creators, protecting their brand and intellectual property. Previously, Jason also helped another Registry secure the rights to operate and launch. Among other things, Mr. Schaeffer handled ICANN compliance matters, selected and coordinated with the Registry back-end technical provider, handled Registry-Registrar channel operations for the company, and oversaw software and design partners to build a WordPress Theme and Plug-In, among other tools, to help customers showcase their content.
Jason has handled over 175 Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (“UDRP”) Disputes and routinely manages six figure and many seven figure Domain sales and leases. Mr. Schaeffer has counseled parties and handled sales to Facebook/Meta, Google, and other global brands and he’s also helped many famous artists and musicians secure and acquire their names. Additionally, in 2021 Jason assisted the parties with the eight-figure sale of a super-premium single word .COM domain name. He also assists clients with trademark applications & opposition proceedings, trademark litigation, and domain name theft matters, in addition to advising new businesses and brands.
Complementing his hundreds of successful UDRP defenses, he has obtained a significant number of Reverse Domain Hijacking Decisions (RDNH). When an appropriate case comes along, Jason is also happy to assist clients in filing UDRP claims to recover their domain names. Jason assisted former Governor Pataki, artists and other businesses in successfully recovering their names. He is always looking to find ways to help clients protect their assets, names, and assist businesses in bringing new ideas to life.
Jason obtained his law degree from Fordham University School of Law in 1998, and he graduated cum laude from Temple University in 1995 with dual major degrees in Philosophy and Political Science. While he was at Fordham, he was an editor for the Intellectual Property Law Journal, served as a Director for the Fordham Law Housing Advocacy Project, and a mediator in Queens County, New York.
